July 26, 2010 - In The Grain with Jamie & Steve

Jamie Hoover and Steve Stoeckel were John's guests on this week's show. Back in April, John and I drove to Charlotte, NC and met up with Jamie and Steve. We recorded them at Jamie's place and filed it away for a future broadcast and new show idea. It was great meeting them and hanging with them for a couple days. They are two genuinely nice guys and I had a great time on the trip.

Because the interview was airing this week,I pulled out some music related to the two of them. Of course the Spongetones were part of that, since that band has been part of their lives for more than 30 years. But I also pulled out some other music that Jamie has produced and or played on and a couple other Spongetones-related things.

There were only three tracks on the playlist that had nothing to do with either Jamie or Steve and those three were played as special requests for the week. Besides, it's good to break things up occasionally. Here are the 15 songs that I played. Can you pick out the ones that were the special requests?

The Spongetones - Curiosity (Shoes cover)
The Hanging Chads - Think Too Hard (dB's cover)
Don Dixon & Jamie Hoover - Horizon (Let's Active cover)
The Everyday Things - Just Out Of Reach (Zombies cover)
Leisure McCorkle - New York Eyes
Coronet Blue - Fool In Love
The Spongetones - Stalemates
Jamie Hoover - Ignoramos And Andy
Peter & The Penguins - Here I Go Again (Spongetones cover)
GBU - Virgin Queen
Tommy Keene - Astronomy
The Thorns - Blue (Jayhawks cover)
The BB's - A Chance
The Van DeLecki's - NBG
The Spongetones - Pick That Up For A Song

Those songs led us into the first ever installment of "In The Grain". In The Grain is John's new idea for a show that combines interviews with acoustic performances. He has a list of artists who want to be part of this. All we have to do is work out the logistics to get everyone recorded. Until that happens, all we have is the premiere performance with Jamie & Steve. Here are the songs that they played during the show

Jamie & Steve - In The Grain
Emily's Ghost
Fly Girl
Let's Don't Count This One
Your Name Here
Black And White
Between The Lines

We had more people than usual listen to the show and hopefully they liked what they heard. If you want to download your own free copy of the interview, click on this link:

July 19, 2010 - Back From Vacation!

It's been awhile since I've done one of these. The show has been on vacation for the last four weeks and it was very nice to be away and not have to think about what I'm going to play every week. But the vacation is over and it's time to get back to business! What did we do this week?

For the most part, it was a true vacation from the show. I didn't think about the show for most of the break and I had very little communication with John. But we did speak a few days before the show and in that conversation I mentioned both Carter The Unstoppable Sex Machine and Bob Mould. John had never heard of Carter USM before so that meant I HAD to play something from them.

I didn't pick any Bob Mould, but Bob Mould led me to Husker Du. But to be different, I chose to go with a Grant Hart song instead of a Bob Mould song. While I was listening to Husker Du, I thought of Mother May I and chose one of theirs as well.

During out hiatus, Alejandro Escovedo released a new album, Tommy Keene released an anthology and The Baseball Project made their most recent track available. That gave me a good start for what to play this week. I sent John 16 songs and we got to play 10 of them. Here's what we played:

The Baseball Project - Phenom
Lowen & Navarro - Somewhere Far Away
Carter USM - The Only Living Boy In New Cross
Husker Du - Don't Want To Know If You Are Lonely
Carter USM - Nowhere Fast
Alejandro Escovedo - Anchor
Tommy Keene - Don't Sleep In The Datime
Mother May I - In Between
Idaho - Drop Off
House Of Freaks - Sun Gone Down

Back in April, John and I travelled to Charlotte, NC to interview and record Jamie Hoover and Steve Stoeckel who are one half of The Spongetones and are also the duo Jamie & Steve. It was a great trip and a terrific performance from Jamie and Steve. Next week we will finally be airing that interview. It's one of the best and definitely worth checking out. To complement the interview, I'll be playing some music that has some connection to either Jamie or Steve, plus a couple other things that I just felt like playing. I hope you can tune in to this one.
