June 14, 2010 - Time for a Vacation!

John has decided to take a month-long vacation from the show. This was our last show before the break and we are both looking forward to the break.

I had no real theme planned for this show, but I did have several mini-themes. John's last two interviews have been geared towards childrens music, so one of my blocks was dedicated to kids music. Another theme was acoustic music. I also had one dedicated to 60's music and finally one of songs that didn't quite fit into any other block. Here are the songs:

Paul Weller - You Do Something To Me (acoustic)
Big Star - Thirteen (alternate mix)
Robyn Hitchcock - Raymond Chandler Evening (solo mix)
Matthew Sweet - Scooby Doo, Where Are You?
Brian Setzer & Stephen Root - I'm Only In It For The Honey
Moxy Fruvous - Entropy
Birdsongs Of The Mesozoic - Theme From Rocky And Bullwinkle
The Byrds - Renaissance Fair
The Beach Boys - Here Today
Buffalo Springfield - Everybody's Wrong
The Kinks - Don't Ever Let Me Go
Brian Eno - The Lion Sleeps Tonight
Adrian Belew - The Beach Goes On
The Posies - Oceanic Exploration
Dick Dale - Hava Nagila
Squeeze - Cat On A Wall

We are now on a much needed vacation for the next four weeks. We'll be back on July 19th and who knows where that will take us. I'll be enjoying my time off. See you in a month!

June 7, 2010 - Something New...

After our Memorial Day show, that may have had fewer than five listeners, there was no place to go but up! We had a few of our regular listeners back, like Tam and Lou and Ron. And we had Sammy tuning in from Mexico, as always.

I decided to continue last week's theme of brand new music. I didn't play anything that I had already played, so if you missed last week's show (which just about everyone did, you'll have to read the blog below this one to see what you missed.

John's guest was Justin Roberts, who plays children's music. The interview was on first, in case any kids were listening, and I was back on at my old time of 9pm. I thought about playing some kids music, but I didn't get my act together in time, so I stuck with new music. Here is what I played:

Peter & The Penguins - She Took Me By Surprise
The Grip Weeds - Hello It's Me
The Sadies - Postcards
Marti Jones & Don Dixon - Trouble Is As Trouble Does
The New Pornographers - Up In The Dark
Plasticsoul - You're Not Free
Julie Slick - Cage Match

Paul Weller - No Tears To Cry
The Dead Weather - Gasoline
Sweet Apple - It's Over Now
Jeff Beck - There's No Other Me
Taylor Hawkins & The Coattail Riders - Sunshine
Don Dixon - I've Had Enough
Don Dixon - Brash Shaman Hustler

We've only got one show left until our break. We'll be taking a few weeks off and will be back in late July to continue the musical madness. See you next week!

May 31, 2010 - New Music For Memorial Day

Last week there was no show because John had a 103 degree fever. Because of the cancellation last week and the upcoming month-long "hiatus", he decided to do a show on Memorial Day. Since it was Memorial Day, most people were busy with BBQ's and other assorted things, including myself. John was in the studio, but I did the show from my sister's back yard while everyone there did there best to provide background noise while I was on.

Jon Dawson, the leader of the band Third Of Never was the guest. Third Of Never is a great band, and fortunately for me, I was able to listen to the interview beforehand, since I wasn't home to listen to the show live. It was a good interview and I'm looking forward to their new album.

Besides Jon Dawson, the only confirmed listener we had was Sammy, our friend from Mexico. We may not have had many US listeners, but at least someone was listening internationally. If you were listening, this is what you would have heard on Donohue's Music Den:

The Grip Weeds - Truth Is Hard To Take from Strange Change Machine
Peter & The Penguins - Here I Go Again from How To Choose A Sweetheart
John Hiatt - What Kind Of Man from The Open Road
Sam Quinn - Late The Other Night from The Fake That Sunk A Thousand Ships
Moby Grape - Ain't No Use from Moby Grape Live
The White Stripes - Little Ghost from Under The Great Northern Lights
The Plimsouls - Everyday Things from Live! Beg, Borrow & Steal
Peter Case - Black Crow Blues from Wig!
Robyn Hitchcock & The Venus 3 - The Afterlight from Propellor Time
The Baseball Project - 30 Doc from Broadside Ballads
Black Francis - When I Go Down On You from Nonstoperotik

Hopefully we'll have more listeners next week. There are only two shows left before John's "vacation". Next week I'll continue with the "new releases" and see where that takes me.
