August 9, 2010 - A little this, a little that. A little bit me, a little bit you!

We came back from our 4-week retreat, did two shows and then took another week off. John was away on vacation last week, so once again, we had no show. But now we're back on the air for (I think) four uninterrupted weeks. Then we'll be off for Labor Day.

During our week off, I heard from my friend Gavin Dorman. He was telling me about the North Carolina band Onward, Soldiers. It turns out that his brother is a member of that band. I gave them a listen and liked what I heard so I played two songs of theirs on this show and I'll be playing two more songs on next week's show. If you want to check them out, you can find them on both facebook and myspace as well as their record label, Winoca Records.

For this week's playlist, I decided to split everything up into 3-song thematic mini-sets. The first set contained the original versions of the three cover songs that started the previous show. The 2nd set was a "Bam & Bob" set and featured the rhythm section of Cinicinnati's own Bam Powell & Bob Nyswonger. The 3rd set had an americana vibe to it and it contained music from Onward, Soldiers and my good friends in the band WAJOLO. The 4th set went back to the "No Depression" music roots and where they went (Uncle Tupelo, Son Volt & Wilco). And the final set took us down under. Here are the songs:

Shoes - Curiosity
Let's Active - Horizon
The dB's - Think Too Hard
Bam Powell and the Troublemakers - Destined To Be A Four Lane
Bucket - Don't Make Me Wait
Tickled Pink - I Never Learned How To Dance
Onward, Soldiers - Stick To Your Guns
Onward, Soldiers - Alright By Me
WAJOLO - Down This Road
Uncle Tupelo - Screen Door
Wilco - Box Full Of Letters
Son Volt - Drown
Split Enz - Missing Person
The Church - Fly
The Chills - I Soar
Michael Carpenter - Rolling Ball

Before my segment, John played Big Star's cover of Todd Rundgren's Slut, which was a pleasant surprise. As usual, there were problems with the phone lines and after several tries, the audio ended up being John holding his cell phone to the microphone. Good stuff!!

Next week I'll have more music from Onward, Soldiers and some other good stuff, including another brand new song from The Baseball Project and some music from the Michael Carpenter power pop cover band, The O'Neders. Hopefully there won't be any technical difficulties this time. We'll see next week....
